Our Story

Hawaiian Lenses is under new ownership:
Mike and Denise are proud to have recently purchased the Hawaiian Lenses company. Our plan is to continue producing the high quality affordable sunglasses with readers that Hawaiian Lenses’ customers expect, and to expand the line and quality by adding new styles and features.

Here’s the Hawaiian Lenses story:
Hawaiian Lenses began as a homespun business on the North Shore of Kauai. Working outdoors in construction management, Steve had grown tired of switching from sunglasses to readers, or stacking sunglasses over his readers. After trying some cheap sunglasses with thick and poorly positioned bifocals that he had found online, Steve decided to work on producing better quality sunglasses with readers. Before launching Hawaiian Lenses, Steve and his wife, Licia, spent the first year researching all aspects of frames and lens construction, quality, and fit, as well as developing styles, logo and marketing. After about 5 successful years, Steve and Licia decided it was time to move on. They had known Mike and Denise as loyal Hawaiian Lenses customers for about 4 years.

We live on the Central Coast of California, but we originally discovered Hawaiian Lenses at Hanalei Surf Co., on the North Shore of Kauai, and had continued buying additional pairs from the Hawaiian Lenses website. We are very active in the Southern California Outrigger Racing Association, and we always wear our Hawaiian Lenses sunglasses with readers for paddling. When steering and/or coaching we can see the GPS for speed, time, distance, stroke rate and mileage, while also reading the ocean conditions around the canoe whether we’re on the water in California or Hawaii. Our love of outrigger canoe paddling has given us a unique connection to the Hawaiian islands, and fostered a deep appreciation for the Hawaiian culture and history. In addition to outrigger paddling, we wear our Hawaiian Lenses for hiking, skiing, fishing, doing yard work, driving, and simply enjoying a good book at the beach or pool.

We were happy Hawaiian Lenses customers, and now we are the proud owners! We look forward to keeping all of our customers, wherever they live, in their favorite Hawaiian Lenses, and we are excited to make more styles and features available in the future.

Mahalo for visiting Hawaiian Lenses,
Mike & Denise
